I bought a two-port amplifier, which has an aerial-in and two aerial-outs, and gave each port on the stick it's own feed - got all 72 channels straight away.Ī) *The* cure for signal strength issues is a booster. I had a terrible time with it, picking up nothing from Crystal Palace just two miles down the road, until I realised that to get the signal from one lead to the two ports requires a (supplied) splitter, which of course will halve the signal strength.Īnybody who has such a dual tuner will have the same problem as anybody who has used such splitters to distribute channels to multiple boxes - if you try this on analogue you get *noticeable* signal degradation.

I have recently bought a dual-tuner Hauppauge USB stick from PC-World, to give my Advent Media Centre I bought from PC World Dual-tuner capability. Your problem will probably disappear if you put a simple booster on it (get a cheap one-port from Argos or Currys). Regardless of where you are, your signal strength will be less than through a regular STB box. You simply have to be aware that all the USB designs simply don't appear to have any step-up signal amplification that the basic STB's have, and act accordingly.

Go figure! Ironically, these dongles may work better with the dinky aerials after digital switchover when the DVB-T signal is increased.ĭon't feel suckered - having a USB stick is fine. but it worked fine after I removed the in-line amplifier. Funnily enough, a second cheapo dongle I bought wouldn't in initially work in the same setup. I have a Freecom dongle and I had to add an in-line amplifier to my aerial setup to get it to work properly. Once you provide the dongle with a good signal it'll almost certainly work well.

So, unless you're in a strong DVB-T reception area, you'll probably need to introduce some amplification to the setup, a mast-top amplifier or an in-line amplifier. That means that one or both devices may not operate effectively at all. But if you add another device (the dongle) to the setup without signal amplification, each device is getting less than half the total available signal. A given rooftop aerial setup may be sufficient to deliver good reception to your main STB operating alone. So, in UK conditions you need to make sure you're delivering sufficient signal strength to the dongle and that normally means using a rooftop aerial.Įven that may not be enough.

But we aren't broadcasting DVB-T at full strength in the UK, are we? God knows, that factor makes it difficult enough for many people to get decent reception just using standard STBs, never mind computer dongles. The supplied dinky aerials work pretty well in countries that are broadcasting DVB-T signals at full strength.
